Many chronic pains are cause by dysfunctional movement patterns in the body. Movement patterns are controlled by the motor control centre located in the brain. These movement patterns are sent out from the motor control centre to the body and can actually be altered by past pains or injuries. Dysfunctional movement compensation patterns like limping and bad posture from repetitive movements in your job or activities are telling the wrong muscles to fire which causes imbalances and those imbalances cause pain.

If someone gets whiplash in a car accident, the muscles in the back of the neck often become painful and that pain becomes chronic. That’s because the muscles in the front of the neck have shut off, so the muscles in the back of the neck have to hold up the entire weight of your head.

The muscles in the back of the neck will continue to hold up the entire 15 pounds of the head without the help from the muscles in the front of the neck which will cause continued tightness and pain in the neck.
